Local decision-making empowers our giving

Donors to United Way Saint John, Kings & Charlotte are making a significant difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our communities by fuelling the work of dedicated non-profits that are making an impact.

While we are now a part of United Way Maritimes, donations – and the vital insights into what organizations receive them – stay local.

Our Community Investment Council, with 11 diverse volunteers from across Saint John, Kings and Charlotte, maintains a strong focus on the unique needs of our communities, prioritizing investments that make the most impact.

The council brings together a wide range of professional expertise and experience from fields like accounting, business, government, and community engagement. This diversity ensures that funding recommendations are not only informed by best practices but also by the specific needs and opportunities of each of our communities.

While the council makes recommendations to the broader United Way Maritimes board, the decisions about where funding should be directed are rooted in local insight. Our local investment council reviews applications, visits agencies, and makes decisions on which projects align with the region’s priorities.

These funding decisions are then reviewed by a regional investment council and ultimately approved by the United Way Maritimes Board, ensuring that local voices are heard every step of the way.

Through this process, our Community Investment Council ensures that the United Way’s investments in local non-profits are targeted, impactful, and aligned with our communities’ evolving needs.

Whether funding annual projects or offering counsel on emerging community issues, the committee champions local solutions while benefiting from the shared knowledge and collaboration of the larger United Way network across the Maritimes.
