Strengthening non-profits to build brighter futures

At the United Way, we view our role as building stronger communities. And for us, that’s much more than raising money to help build brighter futures for some of the most vulnerable people in our cities, towns and villages.

For us, it also means building a stronger non-profit sector by working with its leaders and organizations.

We work not only with the partners whose work in the community that we fund, but all non-profit organizations across Saint John, Kings and Charlotte.

We do this because we believe that a vibrant and collaborative non-profit sector is essential to building that brighter future for our most vulnerable citizens.

Throughout the year, we offer training in coaching skills to non-profit organizations. With access to certified executive coaches, non-profit staff learn skills that help them build the best solutions for their clients and the community.

We also provide mentoring, giving leaders in the sector the ability to seek advice and learn from those who have been there before.

In the spring and fall, we hosted free workshops on building successful collaborations – helping non-profit leaders learn about the potential for organizations to work together for greater success, and how to plan and execute on those collaborations.

And in November, we are offering Take Your Governance from Good Enough to Great to help boards develop an action plan for improving their organization’s governance practices.

We hold regular meetings of our funded partners as an opportunity for them not only to meet with one one another but also a chance for the group to identify challenges and brainstorm solutions together.

And on Nov. 22 in Saint John, we are partnering with Julia Woodhall-Melnik, Canada Research Chair in Resilient Communities at the University of New Brunswick, to present the New Brunswick Housing Summit. The theme for the day-long event is “Affordability & Action: Collaboration to Achieve the Right to Housing in New Brunswick.”
