Alana’s story: ‘I’m finally proud of myself’

For Alana and her daughter, the last year has been transformational.

“It’s honestly been the best year I have had,” she says. “I became the mom that I never thought that I would become again. I’m finally proud of myself.”

She found this new beginning through First Steps, a safe, non-judgmental housing unit for young women that are pregnant or parenting.

A United Way funded partner, First Steps provides access to programs and services in the community, healthy and nutritious meals, knowledge in life skills and staff experienced in working with women and children in crisis.

“I have come so far from the day I walked in here. I never thought I would become this person again,” she says. “Living here has given me all of the right steps I needed to straighten my life up for my daughter. It has given me the start for building the life I want for the both of us.”

And now she would like to move on to Second Steps, an apartment program which continues to provide housing and support for pregnant and parenting young women who have completed First Steps.
