Ben’s story: Given grace and support

Recently diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder, young Ben falls within the autism spectrum. He is extremely intelligent but carries a lot of anxiety.

His grandmother introduced him to BGC Greater Saint John. On his first day, he tried to run away from the centre and was sent home. But there was no wariness on his return.

“They really worked with him and showed him so much patience and kindness. I had the pleasure of spending some time just sitting with his class for a couple of hours.  I can’t express how impressed I am with the staff,” she says.

“It’s so difficult for him and when he doesn’t do well, it really takes him back several steps. The staff are, honestly, angels.”

With a safe, caring club environment, BGC helps young people discover, develop and achieve their full potential as adults, citizens and leaders by engaging them in activities that challenge and enrich their minds, bodies and spirits and nurture their self-esteem.

It is through the generosity of United Way donors that BGC can continue to provide positive experiences for Ben and for other youth in our region.
