When people have inequitable access to basic needs like food and shelter or struggle to find work, they face significant barriers to stability, security, and a better future.
- 27.4% of children in Saint john are living in poverty, one of the highest in NB. (NB 2023 Child Poverty Report Card)
- 43.4% of one-parent families live in poverty.
- The cost of food in NB is up 16% over past two years (Canada’s Food Price Report 2024)
- 128 people were counted as experiencing absolute homelessness in Saint john in 2023 (an increase of 131% from 2021) (HDC Point in Time Count 2023)
How you’re helping break the cycle of poverty
United Way delivers support to people in our community to meet their needs and address the root causes of poverty, empowering individuals and families to overcome barriers and build sustainable paths to prosperity.
Here are a few examples of how we helped move people from poverty to possibility in 2023/2024:
- 92 young women and their babies had support, housing, education and health services.
- 148 individuals secured full or part-time employment.
- 75 women participated in training to build entrepreneurial and business skills to lead to employment.
- 367 individuals accomplished one or more goals towards education or employment.
- 61 women improved their self-esteem, leadership and stress management skills.
